Instructions
- Add the yeast to the water, stir and leave for 10 minutes for the yeast to activate.
- Add the flour and salt into a large bowl. Mix well. Make a well in the centre and add the yeast/water and the butter. Mix to a slightly tacky dough.
- Turn the dough out and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and leave in a warm place until the dough has about doubled in size.
- Turn the dough out, knock it back and knead for a further 3-4 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 3 or 4 equal pieces. Flour your hands and make each piece of dough into a ball.
- For each piece of dough, place the ball of dough on a lightly floured surface. Fold the edges of the dough to the centre, turning the dough as you go. Turn the dough over and put to one side.
- Take each piece of dough and press it out gently into an oblong. Make two snips in the dough to form little puppy ears then stretch and shape the dough into the puppy face.
- Place the pieces of dough on a lightly-greased baking tray and place the tray in a large plastic bag. Leave to prove in a warm place for 30-40 minutes.
- Press the pieces of olive into the dough to form the eyes and nose.
- Bake at 190°C/375°F fan oven, 210°C/410°F for about 15 minutes.
- Place on a wire rack to cool.
Notes
You can make 3 or 4 of these buns from the quantity of dough you have.
Use pitted olives for the eyes and nose. Slices one olive crossways and use the end for the nose and two rings for the eyes. Alternatively use whole raisins.
You can have a lot of fun experimenting with the shape. For example if you make two long vertical cuts in the sides of the dough you can make a puppy face with very long ears that droop!
